The official opening ceremony of the River Tay salmon fishing season was held in mild conditions near Kinclaven Bridge on Saturday.Hosted by Meikleour Fishings and the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board, the event was scaled down in comparison with previous years as a result of COVID-19 precautions.A total of 36 anglers pre-booked slots to take part, joined by representatives of Meikleour Estates and the fisheries board.A procession was led to the riverbank by pipers Ben Elliot of Glenalmond College and Pipe Major Ian Duncan of the Atholl Highlanders Pipe Band.In accordance with tradition, the water was then blessed with a dram of Glenturret single malt whisky from a special silver quaich before special guests Robson Green and Jim Murray – both actors and TV personalities – made the first casts of the season after popping a magnum of Pol Roger Champagne.Afterwards, a spokesperson for Meikleour Estates thanked all those who came along, adding that although no fish were landed “everyone had a great day”.• Pictures taken by staff photographer Richard Wilkins.
