Perth area, other parts of Scotland - and even as far afield as Spain - were able to pay their last respects by tuning in to the live-streamed service.
In a wide-ranging eulogy, the Rev Alex T Stewart, minister at St John’s Kirk in Perth, paid tribute to George’s “loving and generous spirit”.
He added: “George always went out of his way to help others.“He had a great sense of humour, a wry wit and enjoyed a laugh.” Born in Ayr on October 17, 1947, he moved to Perth with mum and dad, Ann and Adam Simpson, who ran a coal merchant’s business from their home in Dunkeld Road.
He has younger brothers Gordon and Garry while older brother John, who was latterly chief photographer with the Perthshire Advertiser, sadly died in December 2008, shortly.
