No plans are in place for a Deansgate ‘relief route’ this weekend, despite Manchester being set to face more heavy Christmas traffic.
The city centre thoroughfare was at a standstill for much of Saturday and Sunday (December 14 and 15), in what transport bosses warned would be the busiest weekend of the year.
Thousands flocked to Manchester as Co-op Live hosted two Paul McCartney gigs, shoppers enjoyed the Christmas markets, and football fans thronged to the Manchester derby at The Etihad.
Although traffic caused delays across the city centre, much ire has been directed towards roadworks on Deansgate. Work started in August to upgrade bike lanes and make the road a one-way, southbound-only route for motorists heading out of town.
