Tourism warning as Spanish island in ‘critical situation’

A Spanish hospitality leader has warned that a popular holiday island is “in a critical situation”. It comes as ‘anti-tourism’ protests are planned in the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Majorca later this month.

The president of the Majorca Hoteliers Federation Maria Frontera has said a “strategic plan” is needed to deal with the issue of mass tourism.

Speaking on Tuesday, she said that the current issues with mass-tourism were not new and that those in the hospitality industry had been urging for change for a while, the Majorca Daily Bulletin said.

She added that “seeking a balance of coexistence between residents and visitors” has been a longstanding issue. Ms Frontera did admit that it would be difficult to find “short-term” solutions to the issue, particularly regarding the “saturation” of visitors.
