Connor Phelps, 25, strangled the woman and attacked her with a kitchen knife at his home in Bolton in the early hours of May 7.
An argument had broken out between the pair after Phelps told the woman he had no money to pay her. Alaric Bassano, prosecuting, told Manchester Crown Court that Phelps had made contact with the woman after finding her services advertised on a website called Vivastreet.
