Thousands of Perth and Kinross residents take part in garden birdwatch as house sparrow comes out on top

Perth and Kinross. Over 4000 residents across the region took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, with the house sparrow turning up in 74 per cent of participating gardens.

The next most common bird was the chaffinch, followed by the blue tit and blackbird. In terms of species represented, the top 10 was mostly unchanged from 2020, but the coal tit did make an appearance after being spotted in nearly 60 per cent of gardens, replacing the goldfinch.

Participation in the annual event more than doubled in 2021 as people turned to nature to find comfort in lockdown. Anne McCall, director of RSPB Scotland, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the number of people who have taken part in this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch, making it the biggest.
