There’s an ‘underground river’ flowing beneath Bolton, and it might soon be open to the public

Landscaping plans for a new housing development promise to ‘open up’ part of a largely hidden river running through Bolton town centre.

The River Croal is mostly covered through Bolton town centre. The waterway is culverted running under Knowsley Street, Market Place and Bridge Street.

However, the new Deansgate Gardens development on Central Street promises improvements to an exposed part of the river. Developers Placefirst, who have been building the new estate over the past couple of years say they will ‘open up’ part of the river embankment creating ‘a riverside footpath with seating, lighting and cycle parking’.

The scheme will remove an existing wall with plans to broaden the river to increase capacity during flood events and allow planting.
