A terrifying TV show way ahead of its time shocked a generation of viewers so much the BBC has never aired it again. The one-off mockumentary style show had frightened viewers jamming the BBC's telephone lines and was later criticised by broadcast regulators.
The Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) later said that the show, Ghostwatch, had deliberately cultivated "a sense of menace" and ruled the programme to be excessively distressing and graphic, airing too soon after the 9pm watershed.
The show's presenters included Sarah Greene, who was more familiar as a kids TV presenter, and chat show host Michael Parkinson, who died in August 2023.
But many praised the show's invention and it is said to have inspired the "found footage" style horror films that came after, including The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield.
