Christmas easily brings the best moments of the year for kids as the magical day sees all the toys and treats appear overnight.

Alongside each year's trendiest toys are classics like Legos and train sets that hold a pride of place. Even as little ones wish for the latest gadgets, dolls and dinosaurs are still beloved must haves. In an effort to narrow down the classics, research has named the top 40 toys every boy and girl should have.

And according to a study of 2,000 grown ups, you can never go wrong with staples that spark your child's imagination and adventure. The number one toy was voted as Lego and in second place was a bike as 49 percent of adults were found to think every child should have one.

In third place was every childhood classic staple toy - a teddy bear.Grown ups also believe toys such as train sets, building blocks, musical instruments and Scrabble are essential for children's development. "There are some great toys on this list which are more than ideal for your kids this Christmas," said Dan McKay for BargainMax, which commissioned the research."This study shows a wide variety of toys are what is needed to really help a child's development - and they don't always need to be expensive."Most of the toys listed are those which enable children to explore, role play and use their imaginations."Something as simple as a football, doll or science set can really aid a child in learning more about the world, themselves and the people around them."The study found an overwhelming 71 per cent of adults think a toy should be fun - but six in ten also believe they should be creative and imaginative.
