In the shadow of modern Manchester's new skyline, hardship is deepening. Across some areas of Greater Manchester, the number of children living in poverty is perilously close to one in two.
And for some facing the toughest circumstances, their incomes would need to increase by more than double, just to escape poverty.
These are the stark findings of a new report published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) today (January 23). Research for the JRF's new UK Poverty report shows Manchester has the third-highest rate of children living in poverty across the UK, behind the London borough of Tower Hamlets, and Birmingham.
