Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE (born 1 August 1965) is an English film and stage director, producer and screenwriter. In theatre, he is known for his dark re-inventions of the stage musicals Cabaret (1994), Oliver! (1994), Company (1995), and Gypsy (2003). He directed an original West End stage musical for the first time with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2013).
For directing the play The Ferryman, Mendes was awarded the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play in 2019.
Leo Barraclough International Features Editor The Zurich Film Festival will open on Oct. 3 with political thriller “The Order,” starring Jude Law, who will receive the festival’s Golden Eye career achievement award.
Director Justin Kurzel will also attend the screening. Law has worked with numerous renowned directors, including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Sam Mendes, Sally Potter, Wong Kar-Wai, Terry Gilliam, David Cronenberg, Brady Corbett, Antony Minghella, Paolo Sorrentino, Ron Howard and Wes Anderson.
His credits include “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999), “Cold Mountain” (2003), “Sherlock Holmes” (2009), “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014), “The Young Pope” (2016), “The Nest” (2020) and “Fireband” (2023).
He has won a BAFTA and has been nominated for an Academy Award twice. “The Order” is set in 1983 and sheds light on the activities of extreme right-wing groups in the U.S.
