The team tasked with transforming the Strangeways area on the edge of Manchester city centre has been selected. Consultants have been appointed by two councils to draw up a masterplan for the much-maligned neighbourhood for the next decade and beyond.
Manchester and Salford councils have joined forces to a commission a specialist team to develop a plan for the area which they describe as 'currently synonymous with crime and a poor quality local environment'.
The Cambridge area of Salford is also included. Work to improve the area along Bury New Road dubbed Counterfeit Street has already started with stores selling knock-off goods closed down in a high-profile police operation aimed at bringing down the organised crime gangs behind them.
The local authorities are also hoping that Strangeways prison - described as 'one of the biggest hurdles facing the area' - will be closed and relocated.
