There were violent scenes on the streets of Manchester last night as protests broke out across the UK. Protesters gathered outside the Holiday Inn in Newton Heath in what appeared to be a stand against asylum seekers currently being housed in the hotel.
Demonstrators first turned out in large numbers outside the hotel on Oldham Road at around 6pm. A group of around 40 people, including children and young men wearing balaclavas, gathered outside the premises.
Protesters chanted 'we want our country back' and 'shame on you' as the violence then escalated. Riot police were pelted with bottles and a man was dragged off a bus and attacked.
The chaotic scenes spilled onto the main road with beer bottles pelted at cars. Local Newton Heath councillor John Flanagan slammed those involved in the 'sickening' incident as 'mindless idiots'.
