In side a makeshift studio in Hulme, huddled around pieces of rented DJ kit and sound equipment, a group of music lovers came together.
They were attempting to create something unique and new. That was how Peace FM first came to life in 2009. It was to be Greater Manchester’s first community radio station geared towards the African and Caribbean community.
Now named Legacy 90.1 FM, it remains the only station of its kind - and a beacon for many people to not only listen to music but to also gain valuable advice, insights and to give them a voice. "The initial launch of Peace FM was based around the Peace Weekend, the gun amnesty and what was happening within the community at the time.
It was about having a voice and giving a platform to the Black community here in Manchester,” station manager DJ Julia Burke told Adam Maidment.
