It’s Friday, so we’ll kick off with a pub story. And for once it’s good news. The Britons Protection - one of Manchester’s oldest boozers and one of only three surviving city centre buildings to have stood near the site of the Peterloo Massacre - has been saved.
You might remember landlord Allan Hudd had been in a legal battle with brewing giant Heineken over his tenancy. That row ended up in court in June, but the hearing was halted after just one day due to a technicality.
But now the two sides have reached what they describe as a ‘positive resolution’ for the future of the pub. What that means in practice is that Allan can carry on running one of the city centre’s most-loved pubs in the way he knows best.
Responding to the news he said: "The main thing is that the pub stays. That's the main thing for me - to keep the Britons Protection alive." Joseph Timan has more here… We’ve also got a bit of news about another city centre drinking institution.
