The lost Manchester skyscraper that was years before its time

Skyscrapers looming above Manchester's streets are a common sight these days. So-much-so, their relentless proliferation in recent years has given rise to the nickname Manc-hattan.

Since Beetham Tower was completed in 2006, the number of high-rise developments has surged in Manchester and Salford. Love them or hate them, there seems to be no end to the mega towers, with 27 towers - up to 65 storeys high - built in central Manchester since 2018, a further 20 towers under construction and another 51 granted planning permission or planned.

Now only second to London in the number of skyscrapers in a UK city, back in the mid-20th century skyscrapers were a much less common sight in the centre of Manchester.

But one now demolished high-rise tower that became a Manchester landmark was Mathematics Tower. Part of the University of Manchester, construction of the 18-storey tower was completed in 1968.
