Norman Whiteside had heard all of those stories before. But the European success of the 1960s felt a long time ago. Through the 70s and 80s that pedigree had faded away and by the time United entered the Cup Winners' Cup in 1983/84 those glory nights belonged to a different age.
United hadn't won a European tie since 1977/78. In late 1983 Dukla Prague and Spartak Varna had been beaten in the early rounds, and with United drawn against Barcelona in the Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final Whiteside was about to find out why European nights are part of Old Trafford folklore.
