One of the most dispiriting things about lockdown football was the piped-in crowd noise which took over the airwaves for most of the 2020-21 season.You may be able to do some incredible things with sound design these days but there really is no way to simulate the gasps, roars and moans of a capacity crowd.Another thing missing from football during the strangest of seasons was what's known in the UK as a 'tifo', the colourful displays put on my Ultra groups.
The word is derived from the Italian word for fan, tifoso, and while the Ultra movement is a mish-mash of different cultures it began on the peninsula in the 1970s.
