It's that time of year again when streaming sites such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video push their hair-raising catalogue of horror films to satiate our need for Halloween scares.

But if you're looking for something a little 'nastier' with a good dose of nostalgia thrown in, then one controversial horror movie filmed and set in Manchester has the infamous accolade of being the only one of its kind.

In the early 1980s, a set of disturbing films caused a national outcry for the levels of violence and gore they contained. Dubbed 'video nasties' in the UK, the films were mainly low-budget horror or exploitation films distributed on VHS tapes.

Thanks to a loophole in film classification laws, the video releases were not monitored by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
