To mark International Women's Day, Oldham Council are unveiling a plaque to commemorate a spot which could have been at the centre of a decision that led to the Suffrage movement.

The unveiling is happening due to Helen Walton, from Rochdale, carrying out research into radical reform. This was the movement which would eventually lead women to be given the right to vote in 1918.

Helen discovered a reference from the book 'Passages in the Life of a Radical' by Middleton born Samuel Bamford. He was a radical reformer, journalist and poet and his later work gives a brilliant window into life in Victorian Manchester. Try MEN Premium now for FREE...

The book states the field in Lydgate, Saddleworth, where the plaque will go, was the place of a meeting on May 4th 1818, where Bamford suggested women should get the right to vote in reformer meetings, essentially granting them equal status with the men who were present.
