The fate of the 1,300 Clean Air Zone signs after decision made

More than 1,300 signs that were put up across Greater Manchester before the Clean Air Zone was put on hold can now come down.

The controversial scheme, which would have seen taxis, vans, lorries and buses that don't meet emissions standards charged up to £60 a day, will no longer be going ahead.

The government announced last week that it has approved new plans involving no charges. It follows a three-year saga which saw local leaders lobby for an 'investment-led' approach involving grants to upgrade vehicles, measures to reduce traffic around the city centre and cleaner buses on the road.

They argue that this will clean up the air quicker. The government has confirmed that £86m of funding that was already earmarked for the Clean Air Zone will now be repurposed to pay for the alternative measures.
