2025 Oscars. Traditional menswear on red carpets is often uninspired and boring so when it comes to to film’s biggest night — and the most prestigious red carpet of the year — attendees can be challenged with creating an exciting ensemble worthy of the high-wattage event.

This year, attendees found their answer in a variety of extravagant, message-laden brooches. Musician Omar Apollo, who made his acting debut in Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” last year, was one of the best dressed men on the carpet this year, spicing up a traditional two-piece black suit with a patterned neck scarf (similar to a red version worn by his “Queer” co-star Drew Starkey at the SAG Awards), black-and-white polka-dot top and, on his left lapel, a bejeweled lizard brooch.

The reptilian pin is reminiscent of the motifs present throughout “Queer,” which sees Apollo’s character wear a centipede necklace at one point.

His brooch at the Oscars is paired with a knitted headpiece, also not dissimilar to the mesh shirt he wears on screen. Costume designer Jonathan Anderson had told Variety that he liked this idea that the caging of the vest was like a caging of this centipede which is about repression,” he said. “And this idea, as Lee leans in, there was like this idea of fishing it out of something.” Apollo was far from the only only adherent to the brooch on Sunday night. “Wicked” star Jeff Goldblum, a menswear icon that is no stranger to an exciting red carpet look, wore an elaborate floral brooch to match the Oz-inspired green and purple detailing also seen on Cynthia Erivo’s gown.
