It goes without saying that this town boasts some of the best scenery in the whole of Scotland. Dumfries was a finalist for the Britain's Best Walking Neighbourhood award in 2018, which isn't surprising as the town showcases miles and miles of natural beauty and history.
Head to the Burns Trail and you'll be walking in the footsteps of Robert Burns himself. Your trip would not be complete without a visit to Caerlaverock Castle, one of Scotland's great medieval fortresses.
Although the castle is temporarily closed due to safety reasons, visitors can still view the castle from close quarters and there are a series of walks in the surrounding grounds.
