Davies died at his home after what was described as a short illness. Davies directed several films that were considered among the best of the craft in his lifetime.
They ranged from The Deep Blue Sea starring Rachel Weisz, to his debut feature, Distant Voices, a look at hs own working-class British upbringing.
His works included acclaim for films like A Quiet Passion, starring Cynthia Nixon as the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson, and the Edith Wharton adaptation, House of Mirth, featuring Gillian Anderson.
