Teenager diagnosed with devastating illness admitted to same hospital wards where mum works

A teenager who was admitted to hospital after a devastating diagnosis received treatment from her very own mother after being placed on the same ward her mum worked on.

Megan Whooley's mum Angela became concerned about her daughter after she became pale and bruised - but said friends and colleagues reassured her she was being 'overcautious' due to the nature of her work.

To be safe, she took Megan for blood tests at her GP surgery, and her worst fears were confirmed. She was just 16 when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and eventually transferred to the ward Angela works on as a paediatric nurse for six weeks to undergo chemotherapy. She finished treatment in April 2019 – a few months before she went off to university. Megan has just a few more follow-up appointments at the Royal Marsden, and will then be discharged from its services.
