Taymouth Castle developers told to "go back to drawing board" over estate access for walkers

Ramblers Scotland have urged US-based developers of the exclusive Perthshire Taymouth Castle estate to adhere to Scotland’s landmark right to roam legislation.The walking charity has called on Discovery Land Company (DLC) to “go back to the drawing board” after a map surfaced suggesting ramblers will be restricted from tracts of the castle estate including land around the ancient Newhall standing stones.The controversial £370million Kenmore development – which includes the restoration of the A-listed 19th century castle, golf course renovation, and 145 luxury homes – has already been dubbed a playground for the mega-rich.An Access Strategy Plan submitted by developers with a recent planning application for high-end houses near the castle reveals what is defined as its curtilage or grounds.Much of the land by the castle, between the River Tay and an existing public footpath, and other pockets of land, appear to be off limits.Ramblers Scotland this week said it would see walkers “hemmed in to narrow pathed corridors” rather than enjoying broader access.However, DLC have refuted the claims, saying they are “fully committed” to honouring the legislation.Rambler’s Scotland director Brendan Paddy commented: “The developers have previously stated publicly that they recognise the spirit - as well as the letter - of Scotland’s world-class access rights.“However, sadly, their new access plan is a missed opportunity to put those principles into action.“They should go back to the drawing board.“We encourage all developers to improve paths, protect public access and create welcoming places for people walking through.“The best developments do this, while at the same time being attractive places to work and live.”The Land Reform
