Coffee bean crop failures due to climate change mean your average high street latte will likely soar above £4 this year, it's been warned.The effects of climate-induced extreme weather have led to shortages and mean rocketing cafe prices will only get worse, experts have claimed.
Astonishing new data shows wholesale prices of Arabica and Robusta - the most common beans used in high street chains - are up by 27 per cent in the last month alone, and an incredible 77 per cent since July.One Skye and Inverness-based coffee roastery told the Record some suppliers had doubled their costs in the past three years.
That means local firms have been forced to pass the price increases on to customers in order to stay afloat.Niall Munro, owner of the local Birch coffee chain, which has cafes in Portree, Skye and Inverness, said he had regrettably hiked the cost of a cuppa to nearly £4 - and fears prices could go even higher.
Niall said: "As much as we try to keep our prices the same year-on-year, it is likely that we'll have to raise the price of a cup of coffee in 2025.“We've noticed a huge increase in the cost of buying in raw beans for roasting, with some regions increasing their prices by nearly 100 per cent in the three years we've been trading.
