Atlantic and 300 Entertainment execs call for federal “Rap Music On Trial” law

The ongoing YSL RICO indictment in Georgia has reignited a long-running debate about the legal admissibility of rap lyrics as evidence of criminal wrongdoing. In response to recent events, 300 Entertainment co-founder and recently appointed CEO Kevin Liles and long-time Atlantic Records COO Julie Greenwald have circulated “Rap Music on Trial: A Petition to Protect Black Art.” “Weaponizing creative expression against artists is obviously wrong,” Liles and Greenwald write.

What the hell happened at the YSL RICO trial?

Prior to this week, it had been a relatively sleepy few months for the RICO trial of Young Thug and YSL. The Atlanta rapper has sat in a Fulton County jail since May 2022, alleged by the state of Georgia to be the ringleader of a criminal street gang (six additional felonies connected to gang, drug, and firearm violations were added in August 2022).

YSL RICO trial resumes after long break

The YSL trial has resumed following a three-week break. The trial — which began on November 27, more than 18 months after a grand jury indicted Young Thug and 27 of his alleged associates for conspiracy to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and charged them variously with more than 50 other crimes — began its previously scheduled two-week holiday break a week early when one of Thug’s five remaining co-defendants, Shannon Stillwell, was stabbed in Fulton County Jail on December 9.

More than 18 months after Atlanta prosecutors charged Young Thug and 26 other men with conspiracy to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and more in a sweeping indictment, the jury trial of Thug and his five remaining co-defendants began Monday morning. Much like its preliminary process, the trial’s opening statements got off to a rocky start, with multiple interruptions along the way.

YSL defendant’s lawyer out on bond after prescription drug arrest in court

Anastasios Manettas, the attorney for YSL RICO defendant Miles Farley, was arrested on Thursday (April 20) at a courtroom checkpoint when officers found him to be carrying prescription drugs. Manettas was dragged off by police at the checkpoint, at which point he attempted to throw his colleague Chadha Jimenez his phone so that it couldn’t be searched in jail, Jimenez told Rolling Stone. Manettas missed, hitting an officer with the phone, which added one count of assaulting an officer to his charges.
