‘Knox Goes Away’ Review: Michael Keaton Directs Himself In A Slickly Somber Neo-Noir [TIFF]
Michael Keaton has been acting in movies long enough to know that if you’re making one, as he does for the second time with the proficient neo-noir “Knox Goes Away,” your opening shot needs to say something. His says it all: a tight close-up inventories the personal affects of an unseen figure taking them one by one, heading out the door, then doubling back to grab the watch, filling the audio track with its relentless ticking.

‘The Burial’ Review: Jamie Foxx Rules In This Uneven Courtroom Dramedy [TIFF]
TORONTO – Considering the explicit gravity of her previous films, “The Burial” is an unexpected detour for filmmaker Maggie Betts. Likely considered a dramatic comedy by most, the MGM release centers on a 1995 lawsuit where a Mississippi small businessman, Jeremiah Joseph O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones), took the Loewen Group, a Canadian funerals services company, to court.

‘Next Goal Wins’ Review: Taika Waititi Gets One Big Red Card For His Underdog Soccer Comedy [TIFF]
Everybody loves a winner turned loser, especially these days, Taika Waititi. As of late, in his non-“Thor” directorial output, the once-beloved filmmaker has gravitated toward zeroes meekly shuffling around the margins of power.

Spike Lee Remembers How Critics Claimed ‘Do The Right Thing’ Would Incite Riots While Accepting His TIFF Tribute Award
Over the weekend, iconic director Spike Lee was at the Toronto International Film Festival to accept the Ebert Director Award, which is given out at TIFF’s Tribute Awards. And as you might expect from someone like Lee, who is not prone to biting his tongue, the opportunity to accept an award named after Roger Ebert allowed for the filmmaker to recall a pivotal moment in his career that was greatly affected by the legendary film critic.

‘The Critic’ Review: Ian McKellen Casts A Deadly Love Triangle In This Overstuffed Thriller [TIFF]
TORONTO – About 20 minutes into “The Critic” it may occur to anyone paying attention that screenwriter and noted playwright and screenwriter Patrick Farber might not be a fan of the profession that is at the center of his new film. Then again, maybe we’re just taking it a bit personally.

‘The Flipside’ Review: A Documentary About Unfinished Business & A Record Store Comes Together Beautifully [TIFF]
Chances are potentially relatively high that all of us, at some point or another, have abandoned a project or two that could revolve around almost any task, from upgrades to one’s home to that yet-unfinished memoir to a rusty car in dire need of some TLC, still occupying space in an out of the way carport ready for that day when motivation strikes and the time comes to get back to work.

‘Daddio’ Review: Dakota Johnson & Sean Penn Shine in Christy Hall’s Schematic But Affecting Drama [TIFF]
The high-concept elevator pitch description for Christy Hall’s “Daddio” would probably be something along the lines of “‘Locke’ as a two-hander,” or maybe “‘Collateral’ without the killing,” though it’s better than either of those loglines might lead you to believe. The premise is a simple one: Dakota Johnson (never named on-camera) plays a young woman coming home to New York who takes a cab from JFK to her home in Hell’s Kitchen.

‘Expats’ Preview: Lulu Wang’s Underwhelming Mosaic Of Hong Kong Loneliness Fits Together Too Tidily [TIFF]
Note: This review is based on episode five of a six-episode miniseries, which Apple, A24, and TIFF decided to show to audiences publicly. It’s not a particularly encouraging sign when a movie begins with the insipid, high-glucose feel-goodery of “Roar” by Katy Perry, but the song selection is indicative of mercifully little for “Central,” Lulu Wang’s otherwise downbeat constellation of loneliness among strangers in the strange land of Hong Kong.

‘Boy Kills World’ Review: A Shredded Bill Skarsgård Stars In A Gleeful Orgy Of Violence & Blood-Letting [TIFF]
In a time when ponderous, navel-gazing attempts at profundity have invaded even the superhero movies of the day, “Boy Kills World” stands apart as an actioner liberatingly unburdened with meaning or cheap sentiment. Instead, it delivers exactly what it says on the tin, a gleeful orgy of violence and blood-letting – wrapped in a stylish and imaginative package.

‘The Monk And The Gun’ Review: Simple Isn’t Always Best [TIFF]
It’s hard to make much sense of what’s unfolding as the first few minutes of Pawo Choyning Dorji‘s “The Monk and the Gun” pass by. However, what is clear is that this immediately comes out of the gate with a slice-of-life feeling in stark contrast to what one might expect from a film with this particular brand of odd title.

‘Dumb Money’ Review: Craig Gillespie’s Smart Dissection Of The GameSpot Stock Drama [TIFF]
TORONTO – About three years ago, an underdog YouTube and Reddit personality recruited an army of retail investors that sent investment powerbrokers scrambling and changed how Wall Street viewed social media. It’s an inherently funny story because it seemed preposterous at the time (at least to the financial community), but it also occurred during a pivotal moment in global history.

‘The End We Start From’ Teaser Trailer: Jodie Comer’s New Apocalyptic TIFF Drama Opens December 8
BAFTA winner Jodie Comer came out of the gate so damn strong with her breakout turn in “Killing Eve,” and she’s shot up to the A-list ever since. Case in point, her new apocalyptic drama, executive produced by Benedict Cumberbatch, who also co-stars, is one of the most anticipated titles of the recently kicked off Toronto International Film Festival.

‘His Three Daughters’ Review: Natasha Lyonne Is Riveting In Azazel Jacobs’ Sibling Drama [TIFF]
TORONTO – We’re not sure writer and director Azazel Jacobs needed a comeback after 2020’s disappointing “French Exit,” but we’re delighted to report he’s delivered another exquisite drama with his latest endeavor, “His Three Daughters.” Debuting at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, ‘Daughters’ follows three siblings as they come to grips with the impending death of their father. And, as in any family, tension abounds.

TORONTO – The biggest surprise in Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut, “North Star,” doesn’t occur in front of the camera. ‘The Dead Don’t Hurt’ Review: Writer/Director/Star Viggo Mortensen’s Contemplative Western Is A Dazzling Showcase For Vicky Krieps [TIFF]
Top-billed Vicky Krieps dies in the opening frame of Viggo Mortensen’s “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” with a tear running down her cheek and her co-star/director keeping vigil at her bedside, which might prompt some confusion from the casual viewer; is this a Western zombie movie? It is not, but it’s a picture that takes some time to reveal its methodology and motives; the viewer’s patience is required but rewarded. ‘Woodland’ Review: Elisabeth Scharang’s Mediation On Trauma Is Quiet & Contemplative [TIFF]
A woman attempts to sort through her past while also dealing with the traumatic repercussions of surviving a terrorist attack in Elisabeth Scharang’s elliptical film “Woodland,” based on Doris Knect’s 2015 WALD. A non-linear slow burn that’s more interested in unpacking the layers of trauma that Marian (Brigette Hobmeier) is dealing with than outright showing the aftermath of the terrorist attack, Scharang’s film works best when it’s narrowed in on the small farming community she returns to, less so when it skirts around her present-day relationships and the actual shooting that serves as the inciting incident for her trip back.

‘Silver Dollar Road’ Review: Real Estate Drama And Familial Woes Make For An Unremarkable Watch [TIFF]
There’s no doubt that, at this very moment, scores of documentary filmmakers, both those new to the game and more wizened veterans of the genre, are kicking around ideas for their next great project, one that will hopefully capture the minds of audiences, open eyes to a subject previously untouched and/or inspire society into making some sort of cultural change. It can be difficult to find that balance, as is the case with any narrative feature.

‘Les Indésirables’ Review: Ladj Ly Tackles Another Parisian Suburb On The Verge [TIFF]
When it comes to social injustice in 21st-century France, writer and director Ladj Ly has been on the frontlines of history. A child of the Montfermeil housing projects in the Paris suburbs, he captured the rage of the 2005 riots that engulfed the neighborhood in the 2006 docu short “365 jours à Clichy Montfermeil.” His celebrated feature debut, 2019’s “Les Misérables,” chronicles the abusive relationship between the residents of that town and often resentful police officers who live miles from the area.
