Director Lulu Wang’s sprawling “Expats” is long and lingering with evocative atmospherics. Complex and observant, mounted on an enormous canvas, the limited series is deeply ambitious and takes on a lot, arguably too much.

Recently, it was announced that Amazon is joining the ranks of Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services by offering a cheaper, ad-infused tier for its streaming service, Prime Video. This would allow folks to pay less monthly, but they have to deal with commercials during their streaming content.

January is always an interesting month for television releases. It’s easy to miss some definite highlights as we continue to catch up on the spillover of the best of the previous year.

Can tragedy provoke a larger discussion? Lulu Wang explores the complex issues surrounding privilege and social conscience in “Expats.” The filmmaker additionally serves as creator, executive producer, and writer on this adaptation of Janice Y. K.

Note: This review is based on episode five of a six-episode miniseries, which Apple, A24, and TIFF decided to show to audiences publicly. It’s not a particularly encouraging sign when a movie begins with the insipid, high-glucose feel-goodery of “Roar” by Katy Perry, but the song selection is indicative of mercifully little for “Central,” Lulu Wang’s otherwise downbeat constellation of loneliness among strangers in the strange land of Hong Kong.

As TIFF gears up for its start tomorrow, there are plenty of new titles premiering to anticipate. On the TV series side, none may be more anticipated than Prime Video’s “Expats.” Based on Janice Y.K.
