A bill that wouldmake striking workers in California eligible to receive unemployment benefits was approved on Wednesday by a 4-1 vote of the state Senate’sLabor, Public Employment and Retirement Committee. Senate Bill 799, which has already been passed by the state Assembly, now goes to a vote of the full Senate. If approved there, it will be up to Governor Gavin Newsom to either sign it into law or veto it. Last year, he vetoed 169 bills while signing nearly 1,000.

Jem Aswad Senior Music EditorIn a big win for major record labels, the Free Artists From Industry Restrictions (FAIR) Act failed to pass out of the California State Senate’s Judiciary committee late on Tuesday night.According to a report in Billboard, the act, also called AB Bill 983, received four votes, two short of the six needed to reach a majority from the 11-member committee.The bill was the latest in a long campaign to repeal a 1987 amendment to the state’s “Seven-Year Statute” that allows record labels to sue artists if they leave after seven years after their contract was signed before delivering the full number of albums required under the contract. Labels can also sue artists for damages.Artists’ rights groups — including the Black Music Action Coalition, Music Artists Coalition and Songwriters of North America — decried the decision but promised to continue the fight.

Derick Dillard sounded off on Jim Bob Duggar in a Facebook post hours before the family patriarch lost his run for the Arkansas State Senate.  Derick responded to a post by Jim Holt, a former close friend of Jim Bob’s who took to his own Facebook to accuse him of lying about his son Josh Duggar’s past both to him and under oath at an evidentiary hearing on Nov. 29 in an effort to sway voter opinion ahead of Tuesday’s election.  In the comments, from what appears to be his personal account, Dillard pulled no punches in calling his father-in-law a liar and "verbally abusive" as well.  "It’s sad that this isn’t an isolated incident," he began.
