EXCLUSIVE: Vertical has acquired North American rights to Susanna Fogel‘s Winner, a political dramedy based on the true story of NSA whistleblower Reality Winner (Emilia Jones), which world premiered at Sundance 2024.
Also starring Connie Britton (Nashville), Zach Galifianakis (A Wrinkle in Time), Kathryn Newton (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) and Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick), the film is slated to hit theaters later this year.
Written by Fogel and Kerry Howley, Winner adapts a 2017 New York magazine feature from the latter. This is the coming-of-age story of Reality Winner, a brilliant young misfit from Texas who finds her morals challenged while serving in the U.S.
Air Force and working as an NSA contractor. A sarcastic, gun-lovin’, vegan, yogi, and CrossFit fanatic, Reality is an unconventional hero who ends up being prosecuted for telling the truth, after she’s arrested on suspicion of leaking a classified intelligence report about Russian interference in the 2016 election.
