A supermarket is still working out cheapest for a basket of essentials despite a 4% rise since last week. It's the sixth consecutive week that Aldi has taken the top spot in our weekly comparison, which looks at the cost of the same eight essentials at the six main supermarkets, including Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Asda.
Since last week it has increased the price of its cheapest 500g pack of mince from £2.29 to £2.39, an increase of 4.4%. It brings its bill for the basket of shopping, which also includes chicken, butter, bread, milk, tea bags, coffee and beans, to £12.12. Morrisons has fallen to third place at £12.31, followed by Sainsbury's at £12.40 and Tesco at £12.43. Asda, which is still charging almost 20% more than nearly all the others for its pack of chicken breasts, is most expensive for a tenth consecutive week.
