Strathaven Round Table give a helping hand to local hockey players

Strathaven hockey players Sally Hall and Sheona Hutchison represented Scotland in the GB&I 4 Nations tournament earlier this month, thanks to a helping hand from Strathaven Round Table.Backed by a £300 grant, the duo headed to Swansea in Wales with the squad for the tournament, which saw Scotland beat the hosts, but lose to both England and Ireland.Sally Hall said: “We take great pride in being able to play for our country and we’re grateful for the Round Table for providing us with funding.“It means we can continue to access top-class training across the country and travel to tournaments like we did earlier this month.”The tournament ran from June 2 to 4, with the players facing Wales first in the 45s age group.Some last-ditch saves in each of the first two quarters shut the door on the hosts, and the Strathaven duo combined to score a great goal on the brink of half-time, with Sally Hall’s diving deflection from Sheona Hutchison’s top D strike – her first goal for Scotland – putting them 1-0 up at half-time.Wales came back with a goal of their own early in the second half, but Scotland pressed aggressively and got their reward as they went 2-1 up.The hosts threw everything they had at Scotland, including replacing their goalkeeper with an outfield player in the last five minutes.

However, the Scots staved off five short corners at the death to claim all three points.The next day there was an entertaining match for the spectators and though England raced into a 2-0 lead and never looked back, Scotland probed and pushed throughout.Scotland’s biggest disappointment will be not capitalising on several penalty corners.Hall and Hutchison saw out the tournament with the final game against Ireland, with Scotland’s defence
