He vowed then that he’d be back 12 months later, celebrating more success. He hoped to be recognised for taking Scotland all the way to the Euro 2020 Finals.
The Covid-19 pandemic has put paid to that, as well as the opportunity to present any end-of-season prizes to the top players and gaffers in the country.
It hasn’t quite gone to plan for Clarke, with Scotland failing to get out of a nightmare qualification group and having to rely on a play-off chance, earned through the Nations League.
