Steve Clarke reflects on 'draining' Kilmarnock departure as Scotland boss pinpoints Russia lesson that can unlock Euro 2020 qualification

He wanted to be up on stage tonight picking up another Manager of the Year award.Steve Clarke was supposed to be 
at the Scottish Football Writers’ 
Association’s annual ceremony - a year after picking up the gong as 
Kilmarnock boss.

He vowed then that he’d be 
back 12 months later, celebrating more success. He hoped to be 
recognised for taking Scotland all 
the way to the Euro 2020 Finals.

The Covid-19 pandemic has 
put paid to that, as well as the 
opportunity to present any end-of-season prizes to the top players and gaffers in the country.

It hasn’t quite gone to plan for Clarke, with Scotland failing to get out of a nightmare 
qualification group and having to rely on a play-off chance, earned through the Nations League.
