Stephen Robinson knows St Mirren are entering the League Cup this weekend with a huge target on their back. As the only Premiership side in Group H, the Buddies are expected to cruise into the next round by both the bookies and the Scottish football fraternity.
But as the Saints found out last season, being the number one seed doesn’t always guarantee success. Championship side Arbroath upset the odds first when they snuck a last-gasp 1-0 win in Paisley in the opening fixture last season.
And Airdrie caused an even bigger upset when they capitalised on Greg Kiltie’s early red card to earn a 2-0 win that sent St Mirren tumbling out of the competition red-faced.
A long-term critic of the current League Cup set-up, Saints boss Robinson still feels the competition doesn’t give a true reflection of every team involved – many of which are still building their squad for the coming campaign.
