Earlier this week, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that the annual Winter Fuel Payment will become means-tested from this year, which will see around 10 million State Pensioners across the UK miss out on between £100 and £300 in seasonal help for heating bills.
The rule change means around 1.5m older people currently in receipt of Pension Credit or other income-related benefits, are guaranteed to receive the payment automatically during November and December.
The announcement took many by surprise, however, the Chancellor explained that changing eligibility criteria will save the public purse around £1.5 billion each year.
But it sparked immediate concern from charities that nearly 2m low income pensioners will face a choice between ‘heating and eating’ this winter, prompting Age UK to launch an online petition calling for the policy decision to be reversed as soon as possible.
