‘Star Wars’ actor Angus MacInnes dies at the age of 77

He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family and love”.“His work touched countless lives, and he took great pride in being part of these stories that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.”The actor was best known for playing Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander, aka Gold Leader, in the original 1977 Star Wars film, a bomber pilot with the Rebel Alliance who leads a squadron during the assault on the Death Star.

Vander is killed in the battle before being able to fire his proton torpedoes into the Empire’s stronghold.The character appeared again in 2016’s prequel film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with the filmmakers using archive footage of MacInnes and newly recorded audio to revive Vander and depict him leading the Gold Squadron as they come to the aid of the Rogue One team in the Battle of Scarif.MacInnes was born on October 27, 1947 in Windsor, Ontario and made his film debut in an uncredited role in the 1975 sci-fi sports film Rollerball.His other most notable roles included playing a retired hockey player opposite Rick Moranis in Strange Brew (1982), a gangster opposite Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon in Atlantic City (1980) and a corrupt policeman opposite Harrison Ford in Witness (1985).His family’s statement added: “Angus was more than an actor – he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humor into the lives of everyone who knew him.
