St Mirren hero Frank McGarvey knows a thing or two about tasting success with the Buddies. In his first stint at the club, the clinical young striker helped fire Alex Ferguson’s Furies to the First Division title in 1977.
And, after a decorated and title-laden five-year spell with Celtic, he returned to Love Street to play a pivotal role in the club lifting the Scottish Cup in 1987 - scoring a late winner against Hearts in the semi-finals before playing in their famous 1-0 victory over Dundee United.
So, when the 64-year-old says the current Buddies crop reaching the top six would equal any of the club’s best moments over the last 50 years, it’s fair to say Jim Goodwin ’s men are chasing one hell of an achievement.
