St Helens captain James Roby has hailed Grand Final hero Jack Welsby as “a very special talent” but is at a loss to pinpoint his best position.
With the scores tied at 4-4 at the end of a brutal, utterly compelling title decider against Wigan last November, St Helens winger Tommy Makinson landed a drop-goal as the final hooter sounded.
The ball rebounded off the right-hand post and Welsby – the youngest player on the field – reacted quickest to touch down and seal the title at Hull’s KCOM Stadium.
The matchwinning contribution of Welsby, who turned 20 last week, would not have been out of a place in a comic book story and confirmed his undoubted potential.
