Spain travel warning for Scots holidaymakers heading to Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca

Scottish tourists have been warned that they could face fines if they are caught smoking on beaches in Spain.This news comes after 28 beaches across Spain and the Balearic Islands - extremely popular places for holidaymakers to visit - have brought in bans against sparking up a cigarette.Wales Online reports that new areas included in the smoke-free beaches are Menorca, Ibiza and Mallorca.Other areas of Spain that have the smoking bans induced include:Caló des Moro, located in Ibiza's San Antonio, is the latest beach to be introduced as a 'smoke-free zone' in order to reduce the impact on the environment.The San Antonio City Council say they took up the ban to improve people's health and stop cigarette butts littering the sands.If caught smoking in any of these areas, you could face a fine of up to €2,000 (£1,712.45) - but each council has their own way of penalising rule-breakers.A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Consumption said: "The objective of the campaign is to create a network of healthy beaches, understanding the Balearic coast as a playful space for the enjoyment of outdoor activities that enriches the health of the people who come, promoting smoke-free spaces."Today, tobacco use is one of the leading causes of preventable disease and death worldwide.

Exposure to smoke from tobacco products has been shown to cause health problems similar to those caused by tobacco use."Since 2019, Spain has been pushing anti-smoking campaigns in order to improve the health of both residents and tourists.
