Anyone travelling to certain regions in Spain this summer has been warned that the government is reportedly set to impose restrictions on the amount of water that can be used.Northeast Catalonia is currently experiencing a severe drought, prompting the Catalan government to consider setting limits per holidaymaker staying in tourist accommodations. And with the dry summer season about to hit, action has to be taken quickly - so the driest regions may be slapped with the restrictions if domestic consumption isn't brought under control.

According to local publication Catalan News, the water cap for tourists will be set at the same level as the consumption of people who live in Catalonia.

Until recently, the Special Drought Plan only specified peak consumption allowances - but these new proposed changes would set a limit of 100 litres per tourist per day in hotels, to be used for things like washing and drinking.

However, it's worth noting that these rules may only come into force if an area fails to keep domestic water use below the limits for three consecutive months under the current “drought emergency” for Catalonia, officials said.
