Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has signalled the return to a nationwide“new normal” by the end of June. But the leader steered clear of any pledges on opening the country back up to British tourists as he made today's announcement.

The PM set out a six week plan to get business and social life back on track based around three phases in a national TV address.

He said each phase would have to last a minimum of two weeks before regions and islands were allowed to move on the next one.

Mr Sanchez announced that four islands, Formentera in the Balearic Islands and three of the smaller Canary Islands including La Gomera and El Hierro, would be allowed to start phase one on May 4 - a week before the rest of Spain.
