Police believe that supporters of the English Defence League (EDL) sparked violent riots on the streets of Southport last night.

Chaotic scenes unfolded on the streets of the Merseyside town on Tuesday evening following a stabbing at a children's dance event on Monday.

Police were first called to St Luke's Road, close to where the brutal attack happened on Hart Street, after 'disorder' erupted outside a local mosque.

Crowds of people, many wearing masks, threw bricks at the mosque after a community vigil was held to remember the lives of three little girls who died in the attack.
