A decision on controversial plans for pylons across the heart of the Stewartry could be made early in the New Year. Scottish Power Energy Network (SPEN)’s proposed Kendoon to Tongland Reinforcement project would see the existing 132kv infrastructure removed and a new 400kv connection installed.

However, nearly 1,000 people have objected, claiming the power line should be put under ground. The Scottish Government will make the final decision, with hearings taking place last year ahead of site visits and closing submissions this year.

In a letter to SPEN’s planning agents, case officer Colin Bell has revealed that “the reporters are in the final stages of writing their report and taking into account leave, hope to submit it to Scottish Ministers by the end of January 2024”.

The Scottish Government’s planning portal shows the target date for a decision is the end of March. Galloway Without Pylons has been pushing for the proposed route to go under ground as they fear it would destroy thousands of trees and habitats.
