SNP council could axe teaching posts by adding SIX minutes to school lunch break

An SNP council is considering cutting teaching posts by extending the school lunch break by six minutes a day.Extending meal times would cut learning by half an hour a week and save the local authority money.Labour MSP Michael Marra said: “Despairing SNP councils are now openly ignoring the panicked threats of SNP Ministers.

The result is chaos in councils and family homes as they try to plan for the unknown.”Councils are scrambling to fill massive financial black holes and cutting teaching jobs is under consideration in some town halls.The Scottish Government this week moved to block the plan by promising to sanction councils that axe posts.Ministers will make some schools funding conditional on maintaining teacher and pupils support numbers.In Clackmannanshire council, an options paper states: “This proposal would increase lunchtimes in schools by 6 minutes each day, without changing the start or end time of the school day.”It would apply to primary schools and save around £121,000 a year by reducing the number of teachers required.As revealed by the Record, officials on Glasgow City Council drew up plans to axe over 800 teachers in order to balance the books.Marra said: “The disastrous new budget has left councils scrambling for savings, and local government officers are being asked to achieve the impossible by completely redrawing budgets with just days to go.“All of this starts with the SNP’s savage cuts to councils but it will have long-term consequences for our children’s learning.“The SNP has ignored the concerns of local government for far too long.
