Six children born in Britain have been discovered living in an abandoned Austrian wine cellar.The kids, who are all aged under five, were discovered in the village of Orbritz.
Police officers raided the illegal hideout, finding the children, a 54-year-old man and his 40-year-old wife. He was arrested amid claims he had barricaded himself inside the property after attacking social service workers with pepper spray.As reported by our sister title The Mirror, the authorities found firearms in the underground cellar, where the family is believed to have been living for several months.
Checks are ongoing to establish whether or not the guns are legally owned. The unnamed man was released two days ago after investigators ruled he was not a risk to the kids.Deputy mayor Erich Greil said there had been recent complaints about the family, telling journalists: "The surveillance cameras in front of the cellar were particularly annoying, and residents sometimes heard children's voices in the basement, and as soon as they approached it was quiet."The unnamed man is believed to have purchased up to five cellars in the area.
Mr Greil said: "He once told me he has ten children and he wants a cellar for each child. The contracts are up to the municipality.
