Sitting in Bars With Cake, 's character, Jane, says she's taking her homemade cakes to bars in order to meet guys. You might be tempted to ask yourself, “Why didn't I think of that?” followed by, “What a good idea…”But know that Sitting in Bars with Cake, which is of the same name, is definitely not a rom-com.
While I won't spoil whether a romance (or several) take place in the two-hour, PG-13-rated film, it's less about dating and more about the complex relationship between two best friends. “This film is about falling in love with life,” director Trish Sie (best known for Step Up All In and Pitch Perfect 3) tells Glamour. “Especially when you're in your twenties, when your childhood is behind you and adulthood is still a real upward slog and you don't have a lot of money or a great job, it's really easy to fall out of love with life.
It's a really weird time for people.”Yara Shahidi plays Jane, a young 20-something living in Los Angeles, in the film, who brings cakes to bars with the hope of attracting romance.
Sie almost passed on directing the project—which can best be described as Firefly Lane (the Netflix series centered on ) meets Beaches (the 1988 dramedy about two best friends played by and Barbara Hershey)—out of fear that it was just a generic rom-com.
