Sir Mark Rylance slams Oscars as ‘really boring’ as he admits he won’t be attending

Oscars for being “really boring”.The actor will not be attending this year’s ceremony, later this month.Rylance, 62, has admitted that he finds the annual Academy Awards ceremony “really boring” in a refreshingly honest interview.

The acclaimed actor said: “‘I don’t think awards are a serious marker of what the greatest or most inspiring things are, but it’s nice to be celebrated.“I won’t be going this year,” Rylance continued in his interview with the Radio Times. “To be honest, they’re actually really boring.”Rylance previously won the best supporting actor Oscar in 2016 for his performance in Bridge of Spies, alongside Tom Hanks.When asked if his award was on display at his home, he replied that he "didn't like to be ostentatious about that kind of thing".The actor added that the Oscar had been "in a box" for some time, and he estimated that it was now on a shelf somewhere.Aside from his previous Oscar win, the Dunkirk star has also won three Baftas, three Tony awards and two Olivier awards.

Rylance stars in Oscar-nominated Netflix film Don’t Look Up, which is an environmental catastrophe comedy about what would happen if we were told the world was actually ending.The film is nominated for four awards, including Best Picture, at the 2022 Academy Awards and also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence.Rylance plays eccentric tech billionaire Peter Isherwell, who blocks the destruction of the comet hurtling towards planet earth in order to mine it for precious elements.

The Academy will host its 94th annual ceremony on March 27 at the Hollywood & Highland Centre.Nominees for Best Actor include Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield and Will Smith, who won a BAFTA for his King Richard performance on.
