Sir David Jason has claimed he was the first choice to play the iconic Father Ted but thought the character was too ‘pious’. The A Sharp Intake of Breath star, 80, apparently turned down the offer in the Irish sitcom as it ‘wasn’t for him’.
Dermot Morgan went on to play Father Ted instead. ‘There was something about the character. It was a bit pious. I could not see myself doing it,’ he told Only Fools and Horses fans in Bedford, according to The Mirror. ‘Not for me, mate.’ He also almost got the role of Corporal Jones in the BBC classic Dad’s Army.
